Some surprise

A new purpose for the former Dominican church in Athy, Kildare where the artistic features of the building were kept for its new iteration as a library. With the removal of pews, the stained glass windows by George Campbell (1917-79) can be newly appreciated and viewed. Campbell also designed the marble The Stations of the Cross set underneath the stained glass windows in an almost continuous frieze.

Above on the right, we see Station number 13; The Body of Jesus is taken down from the Cross. The image of Christ and two others, Christs' mother Mary and a man, are carved into the marble, sketch-like with minimal detail. A solemn moment rendered with compassion and simplicity.
